Dear Resident:

The City of Onalaska has started a 9 to 12 month planning process to determine how the City’s Black River and Lake Onalaska waterfront will be used in the future. The study area includes 47 acres of public waterfront land, 4+ acres of public land along STH 35 and the commercial area adjacent to STH 35 from Poplar Street to Elm Street. This effort is being facilitated by Schreiber Anderson Associates, a Madison-based multi-disciplinary planning firm with expertise in waterfront planning. The plan will be derived from public involvement and technical evaluation of opportunities and constraints. The preliminary and partial list of goals identified in the start up meeting held July 25, 2007 at City Hall includes the following:

m Consider Onalaska first, then tourism and outside attractions

m Balance people attractions with environmental sensitivity

m Compliment the string of neighboring river communities-recognizing people
visit several as they come to the Upper Mississippi

m Safe and well designed access

m Self sustaining economically-economic advantages of location, tourism,
                downtown

            m Develop education opportunities

m Strong connections to STH 35 commerce.

Sincerely,

Jason Gilman, AICP
