Roads & Streets

The City of Onalaska is endowed with an extensive network of arterial highways and streets. Regional highways, which are typically referred to as freeways or expressways having limited access, include:

  • US Interstate 90
  • US Highway 53
  • State Highway 157
Arterial Streets, which serve major activity centers in the area, include:
  • Main Street (STH 157-Business)
  • State Highway 35
  • State Highway 16
  • State Highway 157
Minor Arterials include:
  • Fourth Avenue South from Main Street to Oak Avenue South
  • Quincy Street from STH 35 to Sand Lake Road
  • Twelfth Avenue South
  • Sand Lake Coulee Road (CTH SN)
  • CTH OT
  • East Main Street
  • CTH OS
  • CTH SS
Collector Streets, which serve low to moderate traffic volumes and provide direct access to neighborhood and minor activity areas include:
  • Riders Club Road
  • CTH S
  • East Avenue North
  • Fourth Avenue North
  • Oak Avenue North
  • Eleventh Avenue North
  • Wilson Street
  • Tenth Avenue North
  • Grove Street
  • Oak Forest Drive
  • CTH PH
Several other streets functioning as collector streets, which haven't been formally designated, include:
  • Tenth Avenue North (North of Well Street)
  • Oak Forest Drive
  • Third Avenue South

The City of Onalaska also has an extensive system of minor or local streets. Local streets are typically 37 feet from the back of the curb to the back of the curb with either a 60' or 66' right of way. Cul-de-sacs and loop streets typically have a 60' right of way.

Railroads

Onalaska is served by the Burlington Northern Railroad, which runs north and south along the shore of Lake Onalaska on the City's western-most limits.

Passenger service (AMTRAK) between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest via Minneapolis/ Saint Paul is available in Winona, Minnesota and La Crosse.

Air Transportation

Commercial Air passenger and light freight service are available at the La Crosse Municipal Airport, located 10 minutes from Onalaska just west of the Black River. General aviation service is also available. Airlines include Northwest, American Eagle and Skyway (Midwest Express) Airlines with 15 flights per day.

Recreational Trails

Onalaska is the southern terminus of the 22.5 mile Great River Trail which runs north along the Mississippi River. The trail offers year around recreational opportunities and spectacular views of the surrounding area.

The Great River Trail links with the La Crosse River State Trail in Onalaska. The La Crosse River State Trail connects to the Sparta-Elroy Trail, offering an additional 76 miles of beautiful biking trials. Onalaska is also fortunate to have many urban bicycle facilities including both on and off-street lanes or trails.

Transit Service

The City of Onalaska offers two modes of transit service. The Onalaska/Holmen/West Salem Shared Ride Taxi service offers door to door service at a customer's request. The area of service has been expanded through an agreement with both Holmen and West Salem. Shared Ride Taxi also links with the La Crosse Metropolitan Transit Utility (MTU) which serves the State Highway 16 commercial corridor in Onalaska and the Cities of La Crosse and La Crescent. The MTU is a fixed route bus service with several stops in the Onalaska area. The City of Onalaska has also partnered with the City of La Crosse in providing transit service to the State Highway 16 business area and to provide connections to the City of La Crosse. The Onalaska Shopper Shuttle operates 7 days a week, Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Sundays 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Fares for the Shared Ride Taxi are generally $3.00 while the Metropolitan Transit Utility fare is $1 dollar.
