Background Information
In July, the citizens of Onalaska will be receiving a pool survey from the City. The purpose of the survey will be to determine if the community feels there is a need to replace the existing outdoor swimming pool.

A swimming pool advisory committee has been established to research the need. From this committee, a work group has been formed to put together a survey addressing the issue.

This pool fact flyer is intended to provide the community with information concerning the existing pool.

If the survey outcome indicates there is a need, the swimming pool advisory committee will meet to further discuss possible options for replacing the pool. Public input will be encouraged and made available through informational meetings, another survey or through communications with the swimming pool advisory committee members.

Six potential options have been identified and are listed below.

Potential Pool Options
The swimming pool survey work group has identified six potential options for dealing with the existing pool or replacing the existing pool:

  1. Maintain existing pool and make vital repairs as needed.

  2. Replace existing pool with a comparable outdoor pool.

  3. Replace the existing pool with a basic indoor pool

  4. Replace the existing pool with an outdoor aquatic center.

  5. Replace the existing pool with an aquatic center with indoor and outdoor components.

  6. Replace the existing pool with a recreation center that includes a pool.

Facility Inspection
In August 2000, two professional architects did a facility study on the existing pool. Following are some of the results:

· The existing gutter lip is severely outside the tolerance standard with nearly 30% of the gutter, not skimming.

· The swimming pool discharge water and the wading pool discharge water run into a common surge tank in violation of current Wisconsin code. Two separate mechanical systems are required.

· The State of Wisconsin code requires a minimum of 25 inlets (were freshly filtered/chemically treated water enters the pool). The existing pool has 11 such inlets.

· The fiberglass panels have begun to delaminate.

· Lack of parking (only street parking).

· Facility does not meet handicap accessibility requirements.
